About Silifke

Silifke, which located on the banks of the Göksu River and is a district in Mersin, has a wonderful location between Taurus Mountains and Mediterranean Sea. The first civilization that settled in Silifke having fertile land was the Ionians. Silifke was entered into the domination of Alexandre the Great. Later, this land was ruled by the Karamanids, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans respectively. Each civilization left its own traces on this land. One of the most important tourist attractions in Silifke is the area that turned into a monument by carving rock shaped figures (“Adam Kayalar”) located on the southern slopes of the Taurus Mountains. Being one of the most important work of Roman period, Silifke Castle is situated on a hill overlooking the district. Water cisterns, water storages and castle ruins still continue their existence. During the Hellenistic era in the Byzantine period, the region was used as a prayer location and Aya Tekla Church, one of the first churches in the world, was built in the region. Later, the region was considered as a holy place and visited by Christians. Göksu Delta, which is located on the region where Göksu River intersects with Mediterranean, is protected with special care as it is one of the most special points for migratory birds. It is also the breeding ground for loggerheads and green turtles. The two of the most popular destinations in the region are Cennet and Cehennem (Heaven and Hell) Caves. These two caves were formed completely by the magnificent hands of the nature and they are accepted as museums by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Turkey.

Yuruks and immigrant Turkmen have been living in Silifke since Seljuks and Ottomans and every year on 20th of May, Silifke Music and Folklore Festival is organized. Within the scope of this festival, concerts and social activities are organized and Yuruk tents that are set up along Göksu River attract attention of both domestic and foreign tourists. Inhabitants are engaged in farming on fertile soil of Silifke Plain and they live off with agricultural activities as well as touristic activities and forestry. Silifke is famous for its yoghurt and offers various tastes that are delicious and worth to try. Typical Mediterranean climate is effective in the region. Summer time is very hot whereas winter time is warm and snowy. In hinterland, summer time is colder and winter time is cold and snowy. The closest airport to Silifke is Adana Şakirpaşa Airport that is 3 hours away from Silifke.
