About Odemis

Ödemiş, which is located on the fertile plain irrigated by the Küçük Menderes River (also known as Cayster River), is surrounded by Bozdağlar and Aydın Mountains. In Ödemiş, which is among the most important settlements of our country with its five thousand years history, the traces of many civilizations such as Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans are still seen today. In Ödemiş Museum, where these traces are exhibited, many historical artifacts dating back to the Early Bronze Age and Byzantine periods show the history of the country. While Birgi Village which took its place in the World Heritage List of UNESCO bears the traces of the ancient and medieval periods, Ulu Cami (“the Grand Mosque”) built following the Turkish domination in the region still stands although 700 years have passed from its establishment. İlkkurşun Monument, which is a source of pride for the Ödemiş people who showed great heroism in the years of the War of Independence, is located in İlkkurşun Village, which is called with the same name. Every year in May, İlkkurşun Festival is celebrated in the district with enthusiasm. In Gölcük, which is the region of Ödemiş charming everyone with its natural beauties, 100 years old pine tree forests and Lake Gölcük welcome nature lovers. Bozdağ Ski Center, which is preferred by a great number of visitors in winter months, welcomes domestic and foreign guests in this season. The 300-year-old historical Arasta Bazaar is still one of the lifelines of Ödemiş economy. The 125th Culture park which has been recently built in the district center attracts visitors with its artificial pond, mini gold field and walking tracks.

The majority of the people living in Ödemiş make their living by cultivating the fertile soils and growing agricultural products. In the district having a population of about 130 thousand people, significant steps have been taken in terms of industrialization in the last years. Ödemiş which is famous for potato growing is also known for its Tulum cheese (a traditional Turkish goat's milk cheese), kebab and delicious Töngül Turkish Pita. In Ödemiş, the summer season is hot and dry while the winter months are very rainy. Ödemiş can be reached by using Adnan Menderes Airport or Selçuk-Efes Airport which is about one and half an hour away from the district.
