Kızkalesi (Maiden’s Castle), which is located in Erdemli, Mersin, is built on a small island 500 meters from the land in order to meet the enemy coming from the sea and support the defense of the main castle on the land. It is a historical structure that is the symbol of the city. The historical name of the Kızkalesi is Corycus or Korykos. The transportation to the village, which is 60 km away from Mersin and 23 km away from Erdemli, is provided by minibuses.

It is believed that the first settlement in the area dates back to 4 BC and it is known that civilizations such as Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans ruled the area. Moreover, Cem Sultan, the son of Mehmed the Conqueror, stayed here before his visit to Rome.

You can find churches, aqueducts, castles, cisterns, tombs and stone-paved roads in Kızkalesi which is the attraction point for tourism and welcomes many visitors during the summer season. There are two sandy beaches in Kızkalesi which has touristic facilities in addition to the historical monuments. Adamkayalar is among the places you must visit during your stay. It is located 10 km north of the Castle. The castle whose outer circumference is 192 meters has 8 towers. You can visit Kızkalesi with fishing boats.

Since Mersin Airport doesn’t offer service now, you can get to Adana Şakirpaşa Airport which is 145 km away. You can go to the city center with Havaş services and continue your way to Erdemli with a taxi or public transportation.
