About Kekova

Kekova is a small enchanting island in the Mediterranean Sea just off the southern coast of Turkey. Thanks to its historical ruins, natural beauty and proximity to the popular vacation towns of Kaş and Demre in Antalya, Kekova attracts thousands of tourists every year. Famous for its sunken city dating back to the 5th century B.C., Kekova constitutes an important landmark in submarine archeology. The city, founded by Lycians and developed in the Byzantine Era, was deserted after earthquakes partially plunged it beneath the sea in the 2nd century A.D. Boat tours stop at the the city to allow passengers to view and photograph the submerged ruins, visible both above and below the still, transparent surface of the sea. Swimming is no longer allowed in this preserved area, but the boats anchor at nearby coves for a chance to swim and snorkel. Another stop along the typical island tour is the ruins of the elevated Simena Castle. The Lycians built the foundations of the castle in the 4th century B.C., and the Knights of Rhodes completed it in the Byzantine Era. It contains the smallest amphitheater in the Lycian region. A roughly 500-step climb affords visitors a breathtaking view of Kekova and the surrounding sea.

After a rewarding day of sightseeing, swimming and climbing, weary tourists can rest in Kekova cafes for coffee and a refreshing thick and chewy Maraş ice cream thickened with mastic and salep. A daytrip to Kekova is often planned by tourists already staying in nearby vacation towns. Boat tours depart directly from Kaş and Demre. Alternatively, you can first travel by land to Üçağız, the nearest harbor to Kekova, and take a boat from there.
