About Kanchanaburi

The province of Kanchanaburi in Thailand is located only 130 kilometers of Bangkok. Kanchanaburi is a popular destination for both local people and tourists who want to spend some relaxing time far away from the crowd of Thailand. Kanchanaburi, which offers many alternatives for relaxing with its wonderful views and natural beauties, is also rich in terms of its history. The Japanese, who came to the region following the Second World War, built the railway called Death Railway today.

The Japanese Government decided to construct a 415-kilometer railway (303 kilometers of it in Thailand) with an aim to support its central forces in Burma. The most difficult part of the railway was the construction of the bridge passing over the River Kwai. It took one year to complete this bridge where 270 thousand prisoners from various countries worked. This railway, which took this name due to heavy conditions, is still in use today and welcomes hundreds of visitors. You can see this bridge, which was seen in many movies, as one of the symbols of shame of the war period. Chung-Kai War Cemetery, which is located on the banks of the River Kwai, was originally the camp of prisoners of war. You can spend a peaceful time in this calm and sad place. If you want to go back in time, you can visit the Museum of Death Railway and the War Museum, where you can see the panorama of the World War II. If you have enough time, you can travel to Bangkok after a budget-friendly but slow transportation and enjoy the wonderful views.

Taweechai Elephant Camp, which is a non-profit organization, operates for the rehabilitation of the elephants that were forced to work in improper conditions in parks. You can spend one day here with elephants in their natural environment. This can be one of the most enjoyable moments in your life. You can also visit Prasat Muang Singh, the westernmost site of the ancient Khmer empire so far discovered. Muang Singh is also known as the City of Lions. Sai Yok Nature Park is a region that is close to the last station of the Death Railway. You can enjoy the most attractive waterfalls of Kanchanaburi.

The best time to visit Kanchanaburi is July. In this month, there are many tourists. Alternatively, you can visit this place between December-February if you want a calmer holiday. Rain isn’t seen in this period.
