Gangneung Airport, located near Gangneung city in South Korea, has been closed to regular flights for a while. Those who wish to travel to the city and other nearby areas can use Yangyang International Airport, which hosts international flights, about 50 kilometers away from the city.

Airport Shuttle

Two different shuttle companies serve to the passengers using Yangyang International Airport. Both of the shuttles depart from the airport and reach the bus terminal at the city center. The first shuttle departs at 12:10. This shuttle carries passengers to the bus terminal from Yangyang International Airport until 19:40. The other shuttle on the other hand carries passengers between the airport and the terminal between 07:30 and 15:40. Taxi

You can get to the city center by taxi From Yangyang Airport, and from here you can choose to get to Gangneug by bus or other means. If you take a taxi from Yangyang Airport, you can reach the city centre by paying 6.000 won and choose to continue your journey to Gangneung at a more convenient fare with the buses departing from the terminal. Another alternative is to come directly to Gangneung by taxi; but keep in mind that this is a much more costly way. If you choose a direct trip to the city by taxi from the airport, you need to pay 50.000 won for an average journey of 50 minutes. You can get to Sokcho from Yangyang Airport in 25 minutes by taxi by paying an average of 25.000 won in total. You can reach Goseong on the other hand from Yangyang Airport after a 55-minute journey by paying 50.000 won.

Car Rental

You can come to Gangneung by renting a car from Yangyang Airport, which is one of the most frequently used airports in the region it is located in. Yangyang Rent-A-Car offers car rental service at the airport for passengers. To pick up your rental car from Yangyang Airport, you have to come to the car rental office at the airport terminal and wait a little while after delivering the necessary documents. Then, you can be in the center of Gangneung city after driving about 50-55 minutes.

Private Vehicle

If you prefer to get to Gangneung from Yangyang Airport, you can reach the city via Donghae Expressway in about 55-60 minutes.

The airport in Gangneung is closed to flights from and to South Korea lately. For this reason, if you are planning to travel to a different city or country from Gangneung, you have to come to Yangyang Airport, which is about 50 kilometers from Gangneug city center. Those passengers who are travelling to Yangyang Airport can use their private vehicles,  arrive to the terminal by taxi from Gangneug city center, or rent a car and arrive at the airport after a journey of 50 to 60 minutes.

At the same time, the shuttles can be preferred due to the fact that they are the most affordable means of transportation to get directly from the center of Yangyang to the airport. On the other hand, there is no airport shuttle available from Gangneug directly to the airport. If you wish, you can first travel to the bus terminal in Yangyang by taking a bus and arrive at Yangyang Airport after a transit journey with the taxis that you can take from here in a short time. Taking a bus from the city center and then transferring to a taxi is preferred by some passengers as the most affordable option on this route. Taxi

By taking a taxi, you might travel from Gangneug to Yangyang Airport, both directly and without losing any time. Taxis are a more costly means of transportation in Gangneug compared to airport shuttles that only operate at certain times. However, you can still opt for these vehicles in order to benefit from the advantage of carrying your suitcases easily thanks to their large luggage.

Passengers taking a taxi from Gangneung are usually able to reach Yangyang Airport in about 50 minutes. This trip usually costs around 50 won. You can directly call a taxi directly to where you are in the city.

If you will be travelling from the center of Yangyang to the airport, it might be enough to pay a fare just around 6.000 won. When you travel from Sokcho to the airport, you can get off at the terminal after a ride of 25 minutes and pay a fare of about 25.000 won. Those taking a taxi from Goseong on the other hand should expect to pay about 50.000 won after a taxi ride of 50-55 minutes.

In order to travel at a more affordable fare, you might bargain a bit with the taxi drivers in Goseong and try to have a less fare. You can also have a more affordable ride to the airport by sharing the taxi with the passengers going to Yangyang Airport. In this way, you can reduce the fare you pay a couple thousand won.

Private Vehicle

If you decide to get to Yangyang Airport from Gangneung with your private vehicle, you need to ride about 55 minutes via Yeongdong Expressway. You need to get on Donghae Expressway and then follow Sokcho direction up until Gangneung Airport.

Car Rental

You can rent a car via Yangyang Rent-A-Car, serving in the region. You should keep in mind that your travel to the airport after leaving the city center with a car would last around 50 to 60 minutes and accordingly take the road 2-3 hours before your flight.

Airport Information

There is an information desk at the Yangyang Airport terminal from where you can get information about travel and other issues in South Korea, and an ATM of Nonghyup Bank. When you are at the airport, you can get snacks, chocolates or fruit juice from the 7 Eleven store in the last minute. There are also children's play areas for the families with small kids at Yangyang Airport right next to the waiting lounges. Disabled passengers traveling from the airport can use specially arranged elevators, toilets and parking areas.
