About Argostolion

Argostolion is the capital of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands in Greece. More than ten thousand people live in the city having one of the busiest ports in the country. The port of the city, surrounded by the Mediterranean climate and the green hills, is getting more active in summer with yachts and fishing boats from abroad. Fishing and tourism are the main livelihoods of the city.

Though the city was greatly damaged during the Second World War and the devastating earthquake in 1953, the nostalgic look of the Venetian buildings and narrow streets in Argostolion still remain. You can buy local products from traditional shops on the brilliant streets of the city, tap out the rhythm of the street music, and join the flow of the streets in the coffee-smelling boutique cafés. The long coastline of the city is one of the most beatiful places where you can enjoy the most spectacular sunsents with a sea view. The Koutavos Lagoon, the breeding center of the Caretta Caretta turtles, which is very close to the city center, is the most special area that characterizes the city and the Drapano Bridge, built by the British in the 1800s directly opposite the lagoon, holds a great place in the historic texture. Although it is a small city, Argostolion has many institutions in the field of culture and arts as well as Archaeological Museum, Folklore and History Museum, Korgialeneios Library, San Spiridona Church, and the Cyclopean Walls that are 3 kilometers outside the center of the island, and they are important touristic spots for the island. Though there is not any beach within walking distance in the city, you can reach the bays in 5 minutes by car in the nearest town called Lassi. Many entertainment venues are open from dusk till dawn for those who love nightlife, and you can walk about in Argostolion without driving. To travel nearby places around the city, you can take advantage of the public buses offering regular services, and you can take a ferry to go to Xi Beach and the Lixouri area.

The nearest airport is Kefalonia International Airport and it has border with the town Lassi, which is 2 kilometers away. In addition to taxis, public buses also provide transportation services for airport transfers.
